Two abnormal structures, plaques and tangles are associated with the damage in Alzheimer’s disease brains.
Plaques contain aggregated deposits of a protein fragment called β amyloid (Aβ). Plaques build up between nerve cells.
Tangles are twisted fibers of a protein known as tau that form inside dying cells.
